What is an advance?

An advance is an upfront payment against your future royalty earnings:

  • Definition: A lump sum payment provided before your royalties are earned.
  • Purpose: Provides immediate funding for artists, producers, and rights holders.
  • Recoupment: The advance is gradually paid back from future royalty earnings.
  • No Risk: If royalties don't cover the advance, you typically don't owe the difference (subject to terms).

Example: If you receive a $5,000 advance, future royalty payments will first go toward repaying this amount before you receive cash withdrawals.

Am I eligible for an advance?

Advance eligibility is based on several factors:

  • Earnings History: A track record of consistent royalty earnings.
  • Account Standing: Good account status with no outstanding issues.
  • Contract Type: Your agreement with MIXLE must allow for advances.
  • Catalog Value: The estimated future value of your catalog.
  • Existing Advances: Whether you have unrecouped advances already.

Advance amounts are typically calculated based on 6-12 months of projected earnings.

Understanding recoupment

Recoupment is the process of paying back your advance:

  • Automatic Deduction: A percentage of each royalty payment goes toward your advance balance.
  • Recoupment Rate: Typically 70-100% of royalties until fully recouped.
  • Timeline: Depends on your earnings - higher earnings mean faster recoupment.
  • Tracking: Monitor your recoupment progress in your dashboard.
Example: If you receive $5,000 advance with 80% recoupment rate:
Monthly royalties: $1,000
Applied to advance: $800 (80%)
Available to withdraw: $200 (20%)
Time to recoup: ~6.25 months

Consider Carefully: Taking multiple advances extends your recoupment period. Only request what you truly need.
